Preserving the past, digitising for the future: a spotlight on Irish culture

Abstract:
Irish culture has a long history, the distinctive and unique culture is an important part of Irish life. Irish language, Irish literature, art and music are world-renowned. In modern times, Irish culture has both preserved and continued its traditions as well as has begun the process of digitising under the influence of modern technology. This lecture discusses how Irish culture preserves its traditions while digitising for the future.
About the speaker:
Dr Aoife Whelan is Vice-Principal (International) in the College of Arts and Humanities at University College Dublin. Dr Whelan is Head of Irish Studies and also lectures in Modern Irish in UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore. Dr Whelan’s main research interests are Irish language media and the Gaelic Revival. Dr Whelan’s most recent publication is ‘The regional revival press’ (co-authored with Prof Regina Uí Chollatáin), in The Irish Regional Press, 1892-2018 (ed. Kenneally and O’Donnell, 2018: Four Courts Press). She is co-editor (with Oliver O’Hanlon) of Freedom of speech in France, Germany and Ireland in times of conflict which will be published by Peter Lang in 2019.
